£10million Premier League flop Jordan Hugill managed just six Championship goals during a loan spell at Boro from West Ham United.
Jordan Hugill’s best hope of sealing a permanent move to his boyhood club Middlesbrough probably rested on Tony Pulis remaining at the Riverside.
While fans and critics alike have taken aim at the on-loan West Ham United striker during a difficult season in his home town, the manager retained his confidence in Hugill right until the end of the 2018/19 campaign.
In total, Hugill scored just six times in 37 Championship games – a far from impressive record which certainly contributed to Boro missing out on the end-of-season play-offs.
So with Pulis biting the bullet on Friday, sacked by owner Steve Gibson after a hugely underwhelming campaign, Hugill must be wondering what comes next.
Whoever takes Pulis’s place in the dugout is surely unlikely to been on keeping a striker who has looked cumbersome and low on confidence over the last nine months or so.
And this is not great news for West Ham either. Hugill never looked like a £10 million player, or a Premier League-quality centre-forward for that matter, during his short and ill-fated spell at the London Stadium between January and May last year.
Now, the Hammers must find a new club willing to take Hugill off their hands with Middlesbrough more than likely out of the race.
