West Ham United are reportedly set to sign Patrice Evra.
The transfer window may be closed, but West Ham United appear close to another new signing as David Moyes pursues a reunion with ex-Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.
The Hammers brought in Joao Mario and Jordan Hugill in the January transfer window, but with Arthur Masuaku suspended, manager Moyes is moving for another left back to bolster his defensive options.
As reported by Sky Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio, former Manchester United ace Patrice Evra will be undergoing a medical with West Ham today ahead of penning a deal, and is set to reunite with Moyes.
Evra, 36, is a free agent after being released by Marseille in November, and the five-time Premier League winner is poised to return to English football by signing for West Ham, presumably until the end of the season.
The left back brings experience and a know-how of the Premier League, as well as history of playing under Moyes, but West Ham fans would be forgiven for being underwhelmed by Evra’s arrival – especially after a recent promise from co-chairman David Sullivan.
Sullivan told The Sun in December that West Ham would be focused on signing young players, and would by no means be targeting anybody aged 32 or older, and whilst Mario and Hugill fit that bill, Evra certainly doesn’t.
At 36, Evra’s signing smacks of desperation for West Ham, and fans should be questioning why Sullivan’s promise over the club’s recruitment has been broken after just two months.
Evra may only last until the end of the season, but this seems like another Alvaro Arbeloa-type deal for West Ham, which ended badly, and yet they are targeting another ageing free agent full back in a surprise move.
