West Ham co-owner David Gold is not backtracking from his comments that young players will find it tough to break into the team line-up.
Gold’s comments, made over the weekend, drew criticism from former player Dean Ashton and celebrity fan James Corden among others, The Mirror reported, who argued they were discouraging and sent the wrong message.
Gold is standing by his statements, and after Tottenham’s Harry Kane was brought into the discussion by a supporter on Twitter, the co-chairman believes the England striker’s long route to the top justifies his stance.
Gold had said that going out on loan spells was essential for the club’s youngsters, and this is precisely what Kane did, with the Spurs striker having gone to Leicester, Norwich, Leyton Orient, and Millwall.
One obvious exception is Marcus Rashford at Manchester United who went straight into their first team due to an injury crisis and has not looked back.
It is all well and good to send players out on loan, but sooner or later that cycle has to be broken and they have to earn their shot in the first team.

Kane’s loan spells were not exactly mind blowing, he scored 14 goals in 55 appearances, but Spurs took the decision to subsequently integrate him into their set up.
