Chelsea should enter the race for William Carvalho and beat West Ham to his signature.

Chelsea’s decision to sell Nemanja Matic has unsettled their summer, with the Blues exposed by Burnley in the opening game of the season.

They have a need to buy another defensive midfielder despite the addition of Tiemoue Bakayoko, and the ideal signing could be Portugal international William Carvalho.

He has been strongly linked with a move to West Ham, with Sporting Club de Portugal accepting he is set fort an exit.

O Jogo reported the fee could come to as much as £40 million for the Portugal international.

The Sun report West Ham’s deal for Carvalho is stalling, with the move described as 50/50 with the east London side hesitant to spend the extra cash.

Chelsea are unlikely to quibble over writing a cheque for £40 million, and could re-affirm their intent to win the title in the process.

Carvalho, 25, is a big talent just waiting to land a big move. Both West Ham and Chelsea will be able to offer Carvalho a new challenge, and West Ham’s hesitance could give Antonio Conte the opportunity he has been waiting for.
