Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly attempted to sign Ashley Fletcher before he moved from Manchester United to West Ham last summer.

Few could blame Ashley Fletcher for deciding to swap Manchester United for West Ham in a bid to earn some much needed game-time, as reported by the BBC. After all, it’s not unknown for wide-eyed youngsters to hamper their own progression by clinging to the dream of having their name up in lights at their boyhood club.

Fletcher, meanwhile, demonstrated commendable maturity in understanding that he needed to leave Old Trafford to further his career. As of yet, however, that decision has not been rewarded.

In fact, the 21-year-old has only started two Premier League games – the last coming in December. And he’s spent most of the season stuck in the reserves despite the incessant injuries suffered by striking duo Andy Carroll and Diafra Sacko.

Therefore, it would be no surprise if Fletcher is weighing up his future again this summer. Leeds United were linked with a loan switch in January but, if Wolves come calling for the second time, a short-term loan to Molineux could be the best decision for all parties.

The Express and Star claimed that Wolves were interested in the summer before Fletcher put pen to paper at the London Stadium. And, twelve months on, Paul Lambert’s side are in even more desperate need of attacking reinforcements.

Finishing a disappointing 15th, strikers Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, Nouha Dicko, Joe Mason and the exiled Paul Gladon netted just ten Championship goals between them all season.

Fletcher, therefore, would surely offer an improvement to a misfiring strikeforce. He netted nine times on loan at Barnsley in 2015/16, including goals in the League One Play-Off Final and the Johnstone’s Paint decider at Wembley, and has the raw talent to thrive in the Championship.

Therefore, a short-term move to Molineux could be the making of the highly-rated 21-year-old. And he could return to West Ham a year later with his first-team prospects hugely enhanced.
