The West Ham United defender has been in fine form recently.
Hammers ace Angelo Ogbonna spoke exclusively to the club’s official website, and shared his ambition to force his way back into the Italian national team squad, although he insisted that he is primarily focused on producing the goods for West Ham.
The 29-year-old joined the Hammers from Juventus in the summer of 2015, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £8 million, and he has gone on to firmly establish himself as a real fan favourite.
Ogbonna has already earned 13 caps for Italy, but has not played for his country since 2016.
He has been one of West Ham’s most consistent performers over this past year, however, and if he continues to perform in the manner in which he has been recently, an international call-up will surely not be too far away.
The 29-year-old spoke to the club’s official website, and expressed his desire to force his way back into the Italy setup:
“Of course, I wish to come back to the national team,” said Ogbonna, who has 13 caps to his name, the last of which came in a FIFA World Cup qualifying win in Israel in September 2016. “I would love to play for Italy again, but for now West Ham is more important than anything else because we need a lot of points to get safe. The best thing is to do things step by step. If I do good things for West Ham, then hopefully I will get the chance to do good things with Italy again.”
With just four months remaining until the World Cup kicks off in Russia, Ogbonna will have to ensure that his performances are of the very highest level for the remainder of the campaign, if he is to have any chance whatsoever of forcing his way back into the Italy squad.
