Fernando Llorente’s Tottenham Hotspur contract is due to expire this month and West Ham United are reportedly keen on his services.
Tottenham Hotspur striker Fernando Llorente is seemingly heading for the exit door this summer and West Ham United could potentially be his next destination.
The Daily Star have claimed that Llorente has emerged as a back-up option to West Ham’s key summer target Maxi Gomez, who currently plys his trade for Celta Vigo in Spain.
It is said that with Llorente set to leave Spurs when his current deal runs out in 10 days time, they could move for the experienced forward on a free transfer.
Simply put, West Ham would be making a mistake if they sign Llorente because Manuel Pellegrini is building a team that wants to challenge for Europe and the last thing they need is short-term options.
The East London club should ensure that Gomez’s signature is signed, sealed and delivered because he could be the difference between a top-seven finish next season, not Llorente.
Llorente had his moments at Tottenham, he was certainly impressive when Harry Kane was injured towards the back end of the recently concluded campaign, but simply put, he doesn’t have the oomph West Ham desperately require.
At this moment in time, West Ham don’t have the goalscoring threat of Tottenham and they need every little bit of help, and that includes from the bench.
If Gomez doesn’t sign for West Ham then the last type of signing the West Ham fans would want to see is a free transfer like Llorente.
If they do sign Gomez then once again the question has to be raised as to whether Llorente would be able to provide that extra special something from the bench, considering he struggled to do it at Tottenham when playing with better players, it would be a surprise to see that change at the London Stadium.
