The Spaniard missed out on selection to Spain’s Euro 2016 squad.
Last season once again saw West Ham goalkeeper Adrian come on leaps and bounds at Upton Park.
He was one of the club’s top performers and one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League and it led to some calling on Adrian to receive a call-up to the Spanish national team for Euro 2016.
In the end Vicente Del Bosque went with Iker Casillas, David De Gea and Sergio Rico of Sevilla – leaving Adrian disappointed.
Speaking about this to El Desmarque today however he insisted he is not ready to settle for fourth-choice and will be pushing for his first call-up after the Euros:
“Yes it’s true I’ve been knocking at the gates, but my name sounds good and who knows in the future.
“I have not received any calls directly from the federation Yes I know I was pre-summoned in some lists because I did know through my club but not on the official list.
“I hate to be the fourth option; I am not satisfied with that. The coach has opted to carry three others. They are decisions made and now I’m comfortable with the job I’m doing. “
Spain are blessed with goalkeeping options. Not only in Casillas and De Gea but in Rico, Sergio Asenjo and Pau Lopez – not to mention forgotten veterans such as Victor Valdes and Pepe Reina.
Adrian though will rightly argue that he is on par with any of these ‘keeper options on current form and will be pushing for his first call-up in the years to come.
With captain Casillas expected to retire from international football after the Euros this summer a space in the squad is set to become vacant – Adrian would love to fill it.
