If West Ham United’s budget is £75 million, as the Daily Mirror report, then to spend this summer then signing Jamaal Lascelles from Newcastle United would have to be considered a major risk.

The centre-back is now one of the most in-demand defenders in the Premier League, but the Chronicle suggest that he will cost well over £25 million to buy from Newcastle.

And that price-tag means that if Pellegrini was to make him West Ham’s first choice target, he would have very little to spend on the rest of his squad.

There is no doubting that Lascelles could improve West Ham’s first-team, if he was to arrive at the London Stadium, but investing half of his budget on one player would be a major gamble for Pellegrini.

And the Chilean boss may be better off looking to alternative targets, as he looks to make improvements to all areas of West Ham’s squad.
