West Ham United have been linked with a move for Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes.

West Ham United getting Bruno Fernandes on a free should still be treated as a coup, despite his poor World Cup displays.

West Ham have reportedly sanctioned a bid for the £18 million attacking midfielder The Sun on Sunday (01/07; page 60), following the expiration of his contract at Sporting Lisbon.

The Daily Mirror linked Fernandes to a £87 million move to Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool earlier this summer, which shows just how highly he was regarded only months ago.

Fernandes’ contract situation at Sporting has plunged his future in to doubt now, and if West Ham can get him for just £18 million then it would have to go down as a brilliant move.

Fernandes had a disappointing World Cup with his performances for Portugal failing to impress.

But his time in Russia looks to have been a blip rather than the norm, as his performances over the past campaign have been largely exceptional.

Fernandes scored 11 goals and claimed eight assists in the Portuguese top flight last term, making him one of the most feared playmakers in the division.

And if West Ham could bring Fernandes to the London Stadium then it is a transfer move which should be celebrated by everyone involved with the Hammers.
