West Ham United want Formose Mendy with initial discussions over a deal for the Amiens defender taking place ahead of a possible move.

That’s according to The Athletic, who claim that West Ham are tracking Mendy ahead of a possible move for the centre back.

It’s added that ‘exploratory conversations’ have taken place for Mendy to join West Ham, whether that’s just with his agent or with Amiens.

The report notes that Ligue 1 side Lens have already offered £7million for Mendy, and that bid has been rejected with Amiens holding out for more cash.

An immediate deal isn’t thought to be likely but West Ham are considering their options at centre back.

Craig Dawson is a wanted man and Kurt Zouma is injured, so maybe we will see West Ham make their move for Mendy should Dawson go.

Who is West Ham United target Formose Mendy?

Mendy started his career with Academie Foot Darou Salam over in his native Senegal.

Porto saw major potential in Mendy and lured him to Portugal as a teenager, but he spent just a year there.

Club Brugge were the next to sign Mendy but again, that stint lasted just a year.

Mendy was placed into ‘Club NXT’, the academy side of Club Brugge, who played in the second tier in Belgium.

Mendy notched 12 appearances there, tempting Amiens into signing him in 2021 as his nomadic career continued.

Now seemingly settled in France, Mendy has turned out more than 50 times for Amiens, bagging three goals.

A 6ft 3in centre back, Mendy was named in the Senegal squad for the World Cup but didn’t make an appearance.

Amiens boss Philippe Hinschberger claimed in January of last year that English clubs were very interested in signing Mendy.

Hinschberger did though suggest in October that Mendy needs to stop doing ‘stupid things’ and keep his concentration having made a number of errors against Saint-Etienne.

Mendy appears to have major potential but needs to develop over the coming years, with West Ham maybe believing that they can iron out those issues.
