West Ham United’s season got off to the worst possible start as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Newcastle United.
The Hammers headed into the new season with no new additions from the last campaign, and with club captain Mark Noble publicly slating the decision to sell winger Grady Diangana to West Bromwich Albion.
That kind of energy didn’t exactly bode well for the Hammers, and they were flat in a rather disappointing performance.
Callum Wilson continued his remarkable record against West Ham with the opening goal, scoring his first Newcastle United goal from close range.
A fellow new signing bagged the second as Jeff Hendrick fired high into the roof of the net, giving Newcastle a 2-0 win in East London.
West Ham couldn’t recover and slumped to defeat, and there weren’t many positives to take from such a flat display.

Midfielder Tomas Soucek at least showed some fight and quality, and came close to scoring in the first half as he headed a Ryan Fredericks cross just wide of the target.
Some fans praised the Czech ace, branding him a ‘baller’ and the only player to deserve any credit, adding that he is Marouane Fellini Mark II under David Moyes thanks to his ability in the air.
