West Ham United fans haven’t reacted well to Toni Martinez’s latest performance for the senior side.

The Spanish striker started alongside Javier Hernandez in Saturday’s demoralising 2-0 defeat away to League One side Wigan Athletic.

Neither covered themselves in glory but it must be noted that there was a distinct lack of service, especially after Arthur Masuaku was sent off within five minutes of the restart for spitting at Nick Powell.

Even still, it was an underwhelming performance from Martinez, a man who West Ham fans had been crying out for in recent months after proving himself a very capable striker in the Under-23 side.

Former Hammers boss Slaven Bilic consistently withstood the pressure from fans to give the young Spaniard first-team chances, and some supporters acknowledge that perhaps David Moyes’s predecessor was right all along.

Of course, failing to impress against the Latics doesn’t mean that Martinez is a bad striker by any means, but the fact that he had no shots against them might suggest that the youngster, who had a loan spell at Oxford United last season, is nowhere near ready for Premier League football.

That being said, the former Valencia man, who joined West Ham in 2016, does not turn 21 until June, so time is clearly on his side.
