West Ham United want Edson Alvarez as they join Newcastle United and other Premier League clubs in the race for his signature.

The Hammers were keen to bolster their midfield over the summer following Mark Noble’s retirement.

In came fellow boyhood West Ham fan Flynn Downes and then Lucas Paqueta arrived in a big move from Lyon.

Yet with Declan Rice bound to attract interest and Tomas Soucek’s contract still a source of concern, West Ham need to have other midfield targets in mind.

West Ham United want Edson Alvarez

90Min now claim that West Ham are interested in signing Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez.

West Ham have been scouting over in the Netherlands and having already shown an interest in PSV Eindhoven’s Ibrahim Sangare, they now fancy Alvarez too.

It’s suggested that Alvarez has caught the eye of West Ham and the Mexican ace fancies heading to the Premier League.

Alvarez will be on show at the World Cup with Mexico and West Ham will be paying very close attention.

The 25-year-old is a pure holding midfield player and would certainly fit into West Ham’s 4-2-3-1 whilst allowing Declan Rice to get forward.

The problem for West Ham is interest in Alvarez from elsewhere.

Mexican TV station TUDN report that Newcastle United made a £25million bid for Alvarez in August but Ajax rejected that offer.

90Min then claimed that Arsenal had joined the race ahead of the transfer deadline but the Gunners didn’t make a move.

Chelsea took the race to a new level by offering £43million as De Telegraaf claimed Alvarez skipped Ajax training to try and force a late move.

Ajax again stood firm and decided to keep Alvarez after losing the likes of Nicolas Tagliafico, Andre Onana, Noussair Mazraoui, Lisandro Martinez, Sebastien Haller, Antony and Ryan Gravenberch.

That means West Ham face a huge bill if they want to sign Alvarez, especially with The London Evening Standard claiming that Chelsea still want Alvarez in January.
