West Ham United wanted Darwin Nunez in January and David Moyes will be ruing miss out after his Liverpool winner.

Moyes took his West Ham side up to Merseyside on Wednesday with three points on offer at Anfield.

Unfortunately for the Hammers it wasn’t to be for them with striker Nunez heading the only goal of the game in the first half.

West Ham did have their chances; Jarrod Bowen’s penalty was saved by Alisson and Tomas Soucek was denied from close range in the second half.

West Ham United wanted Darwin Nunez in January

Another defeat to a top six club is a bitter pill for Moyes to swallow, and it was only made worse by the goalscorer.

Nunez nipped ahead of Thilo Kehrer to head past Lukasz Fabianski from a superb Kostas Tsimikas cross.

This was an example of the predatory instincts Nunez can provide – not that West Ham needed a reminder.

Moyes was actually hoping to sign Nunez during the January transfer window.

Sky Sports reported on deadline day in January that West Ham had offered over £37million to try and sign Nunez from Benfica.

Benfica stood firm and rejected that bid but it wasn’t the end of West Ham,’s interest in the Uruguayan.

The Express reported in April that Moyes was still hoping to bring Nunez to East London despite his ever-increasing price tag.

Sure enough, Nunez ended up joining Liverpool in a deal that could be worth more than twice the £37million Moyes and co offered.

Nunez just couldn’t stop scoring after West Ham’s January interest and his form ultimately took him out of Moyes’ reach.

The Hammers boss was given a front-row seat to Nunez’s match-winning display and he caused plenty more problems even after his goal.

West Ham will of course be happy with their big-money striker signing Gianluca Scamacca, but Moyes would be forgiven for wondering how Wednesday’s game could have been different if Nunez had joined the Hammers instead.
