West Ham United are believed to be closing in on Chris Smalling and Olivier Giroud.

West Ham United could make a great start to their summer business by bringing in both Chris Smalling and Olivier Giroud.

The Daily Express have suggested that West Ham are leading the race for Manchester United defender Smalling, while Slaven Bilic’s side are also thought to be closing in on snapping up Giroud from Arsenal (London Evening Standard).

The pair of Premier League stalwarts are both believed to be available this summer, with United and Arsenal looking to cash-in.

And if West Ham were able to bring both Smalling and Giroud to the London Stadium it would be a serious statement of intent.

Although Smalling and Giroud may have their critics at their current clubs, they would add significant quality to West Ham’s starting line-up.

Smalling remains a very talented defender, and a potential partnership with Winston Reid looks like it could be formidable.

Both Jose Fonte and James Collins struggled over the past campaign, and Smalling would be a considerable upgrade on either of the veteran pair.

Giroud, meanwhile, is a proven scorer at Premier League level – and his arrival at West Ham would make Bilic’s side a much greater attacking threat.

No player at the Hammers managed to get into double figures last season, but Giroud has never failed to reach the 10 goal milestone in a Premier League season, ever since moving to England back in 2012.
