Crystal Palace signed James Tomkins from West Ham United yesterday.
West Ham United co-owner David Gold has defended his decision to sell James Tomkins.
Tomkins joined Crystal Palace yesterday, ending a 20-year stay with the Hammers.
The centre-back was a fans’ favourite at West Ham, due to his loyalty, but Gold insists that the decision to sell him was correct.
Tomkins made over 200 appearances during his stay with West Ham, but he was deemed surplus to requirements by Slaven Bilic.
Tomkins struggled to break into West Ham’s team at centre-back last season, with many of his appearances coming on the right hand side of their defence.
West Ham clearly felt that Tomkins’ game time would be limited next term, as they aim to bolster their squad even further.
Tomkins is expected to play a key role at Palace, after penning a five-year contract with Alan Pardew’s side.
The defender is due to train with his new Palace teammates today, before they jet off on tour next week.
