West Ham United were close to signing Duvan Zapata from Atalanta on January transfer deadline day, according to Sky Sports.
Sky Sports have reported that West Ham submitted a deal sheet to the Premier League, but the Hammers could not get the deal for Zapata over the line.
The report has claimed that West Ham have been looking at the Colombia international striker since 2013 when he was at Estudiantes in Argentina.
Sky Sports have reported that Newcastle were also interested in the 30-year-old Atalanta striker.
Well-known and well-respected Italian football journalist Gianluca Di Marzio said on Sky Sports News (8:36pm, January 31, 2022): “We knew that Newcastle tried. West Ham tried.”
Sky Sports have reported that West Ham also failed in their bids to sign Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard, Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, Leeds United’s Raphinha and Reims teenager Hugo Ekitike.

Duvan Zapata would have made West Ham better
In our view, Zapata would have been a very good signing for West Ham and would have made David Moyes’s side very potent in attack.
The 30-year-old Colombia international is one of the better strikers in Serie A.
Zapata has scored nine goals and provided four assists in 14 Serie A starts for Atalanta so far this season.
The striker has also scored three goals and provided three assists in five Champions League starts so far this campaign.
