West Ham United are interested in signing Shakhtar Donetsk defender Mykola Matviyenko but face competition from Premier League rivals.

Shakhtar Donetsk defender Mykola Matviyenko is back on the wish list of Premier League clubs ahead of January.

Shakhtar have sadly lost a few players in recent times amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Manor Solomon and Tete have moved on whilst Shakhtar cashed in on Mykhailo Mudryk earlier this year.

A number of players have headed out on loan around the world too and they even lost star goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin to Benfica.

West Ham United want Mykola Matviyenko

Another Ukrainian could now leave Shakhtar with defender Matviyenko in demand.

TEAMtalk claim that Matviyenko’s camp are exploring potential transfers and four Premier League clubs are keen.

Burnley, Crystal Palace, Everton and West Ham United are all thought to be interested.

All four clubs are allegedly exploring a deal for Matviyenko but there may even be lingering interest from elsewhere.

Sky Sports News reported in January of this year that Brighton and Hove Albion had failed with an offer for Matviyenko.

Boss Roberto De Zerbi knows Matviyenko from his time as Shakhtar boss and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him return to the race having admitted to Sussex Live that he loves Matviyenko.

Who is Shakhtar ace Matviyenko?

The 27-year-old has come up through the Shakhtar ranks and has now racked up more than 100 first-team appearances.

A left-footed defender, Matviyenko mostly plays as a centre back but does also have some history as a left back.

West Ham have actually been chasing Matviyenko for a while now.

The Athletic reported in December 2021 that West Ham were eyeing up a move for Matviyenko, just months after 90Min claimed that the Hammers viewed him as an alternative to Kurt Zouma.

Matviyenko appears to have been on the Hammers radar for a long time now and 2024 may be the time to strike.
