West Ham Under-23s are battling against relegation from the first tier of the Premier League 2.
West Ham United Under-23s midfielder Conor Coventry has spoken out about his side’s battling 2-2 draw at Derby County and banged the drum ahead of their last game of the Premier League 2 campaign against Everton at the London Stadium.
The Hammers, who are battling against relegation from the first tier of the PL2, travelled to Pride Park for a game against the Rams last time out and twice came from behind to leave the East Midlands with a point.
Marcus Olsson saw his low cross turned home by Jayden Mitchell-Lawson to put Derby ahead in the first half but Jahmal Hector-Ingram replied for the Hammers in the second half.
Josh Shonibare edged Derby ahead once again, only for Nathan Holland to make sure of a share of the points at the final whistle for Liam Manning’s side.
However, Tottenham Hotspur’s win at relegated Swansea City meant that whether the Hammers retain their status in the first division is now out of their hands.
Spurs, who play Derby on the final day, leapfrogged the Hammers out of the drop zone and are now two points and a place ahead of the East Londoners, whose next game is against the champions on 29 April.
“I think on the ball we really dominated the game, we just maybe didn’t finish our chances,” Coventry told the official West Ham website. “We could have created slightly better chances and then we’ve given away two goals. It’s stuff that we shouldn’t really be doing at this level and it’s cost us.
“On the whole we should be coming away with the win. It was good from the boys to come back twice. Everyone’s got to lift their spirits now for another big game against Everton and obviously we have to win. It’s out of our hands now as to whether we stay up but we have to win so everyone will be ready for that.”
