Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett says Sunderland have agreed a fee for West Ham youngster Pierre Ekwah with the player currently undergoing a medical on Wearside, before signing a contract that will keep him until June 2027.

Ekwah, 20, only joined West Ham 18 months ago from Chelsea’s academy. He has since been a regular in West Ham’s second string, playing 39 times – scoring nine goals from the middle of the park. But he has not made a senior debut.

But he has entered the final 18 months of his contract at the London Stadium. Despite failing to make the grade at West Ham under David Moyes, one of the current Hammers boss’ former sides are now set to sign the midfielder.

Ekwah is set to join Sunderland on a deal until June 2027 with a fee agreed. He is currently on Wearside undergoing a medical with a deal close to completion. Dorsett also reports that there has been a verbal agreement from Ekwah.

Sunderland have shown since promotion to the Championship that they are willing to play young players. Jack Clarke, formerly of Leeds and Tottenham, Edouard Michut who is on loan from PSG, Daniel Ballard – signed from Arsenal.

So, Ekwah has every right to think that a move for Sunderland will instantly improve his game time – and at a good level. He may have to be patient initially but on paper, it looks a very good move for the young West Ham midfielder.

Sunderland take on Premier League side Fulham in the fourth round of the FA Cup this weekend. It could see Ekwah make his debut, not only for Sunderland – but the first senior outing of his professional career. An exciting addition.
