West Ham wanted Matt Doherty on deadline day and the Tottenham Hotspur man would be forgiven for wishing a deal materialised.
West Ham have re-tooled their back line with David Moyes keen to bolster his defence.
Two centre backs have arrived with Nayef Aguerd and Thilo Kehrer both joining before a left back was landed in Emerson Palmieri.
Adding a right back was then seen as a priority for Moyes, but a total rebuild of the West Ham back line evaded the Scot on deadline day.
West Ham wanted Matt Doherty on deadline day
West Ham considered a number of right backs and one of them was believed to be Tottenham Hotspur’s Matt Doherty.
Reports on deadline day suggested that West Ham had asked about signing Doherty but no deal was done.
That means Doherty will now be stuck at Tottenham until January, and it may leave him wishing a move to West Ham had actually materialised.
Doherty has been on the bench for every single one of Tottenham’s Premier League games.
The 30-year-old has only played four minutes of first-team action this season and that came as a substitute on the opening day of the season.
That means Doherty hasn’t kicked a ball for Tottenham for a month now and it’s hard to see that changing any time soon.
Tottenham have Emerson Royal and Djed Spence at right wing back, whilst even if you factor in Doherty’s versatility to play on the left side, Ryan Sessegnon and Ivan Perisic are there.
Champions League games may allow for some rotation but it’s still difficult to see Doherty suddenly picking up starts after playing just four minutes this season.
A move to West Ham would have at least given Doherty a chance to play regularly given that Vladimir Coufal hasn’t been at his best for a while now.
Staying in London would have surely appealed to Doherty too, and if West Ham come back in for him in January, Doherty should jump at the chance to join the Hammers.
