Rumoured West Ham target Josip Brekalo is reportedly in talks to sign for Serie A side Monza, with the Croatian international hardly featuring for VfL Wolfsburg this season.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the winger will leave the German side in the January transfer window, with Monza surprisingly leading the race to sign the 24-year-old despite CalcioMercato reporting in the summer that West Ham, as well as Southampton, were interested in the attacker.
Brekalo spent last season out on loan with Torino where the forward impressed for the Turin-based side, with the attacker bagging seven goals and two assists in Serie A. However, the Croat has failed to replicate this form this campaign with parent club Wolfsburg.
With Torino passing up on an £11m option to sign Brekalo permanently, many were surprised to see the attacker fail to move on from Wolfsburg in the summer, especially with the likes of West Ham and Southampton chasing the Zagreb-born talent.
And the results are starting to show, with Brekalo playing just 313 minutes in all competitions for Wolfsburg. And whilst a Premier League move might be alluring, a return to Italy with Monza could be perfect for the 24-year-old to get his career back on track.
Monza move could inspire West Ham to move for Brekalo in the summer

Brekalo’s talent is clear for many to see, with the Croatian international one of the stars of Serie A last season and the forward himself very unlucky to miss out on a summer move despite interest from West Ham. Yet a transfer in January could reignite past motives from the Irons in the summer.
As we know, Brekalo has already done the job in Italy with Torino, and whilst Monza are relative minnows to the top-flight, the attacker could be a great addition to Lombardy-based club, which in turn could see West Ham eye the winger yet again in 2023.
