West Ham United’s under-21 side fought back to secure a stunning 5-4 win against Newport County last night.

The EFL Trophy match-up saw West Ham fight back from being 4-1 down at half-time.

Hammers youngster Sam Caiger told the club website that clear instructions were given at the interval by manager Dmitri Halajko.

Caiger said the team were told to try and pull a goal back as quickly as possible to disrupt Newport’s momentum.

West Ham were able to do so, scoring just minutes into the second half when Joe Powell scored and won a penalty.

This inspire a memorable comeback, with Veron Parkes and Kai Corbett scoring before Josh Scully netted his second goal to win the game.

Caiger said: “I’m speechless. To come back from 4-1 down at half-time… after our team talk, we just had to come out on the front foot -– and that’s what we did.

“Obviously the gaffer wasn’t impressed at half-time – he was strict with us – but he trusts in us. He said we needed to come out fighting in the second half, and that’s what we did.

“The manager told us that we needed a goal early on in the second half, so when we scored in the 47th minute, from then on, we knew we had a chance.”

Results like this are obviously hugely beneficial to the young players, and it is probably a game many will remember forever.

It will help a lot mentally for the players, knowing that no matter the deficit, they can turn it around, and this has to be helpful to them as they bid to kick on and become successes.
