West Ham United talent Ben Johnson has told the club website he is thrilled to have made the under-23 team and he is keen to kick on.

The 17-year-old featured in the Checkatrade Trophy this week against Bristol Rovers and he wants to become a regular for the side.

Johnson spoke confidently about his performance, commenting: “I felt comfortable out there.

“I think I’ve made a good showing for myself and staked a claim to a regular starting position.

“I feel I’ve been consistent and I reckon I had a good showing against Chelsea. In each of the games I’ve played I reckon I’ve done well so I’m hoping I’ve earned a regular starting place.”

Johnson is a midfielder but featured this week at left-back, showcasing his versatility. He has also featured at right-back this season.

He has made six appearances now in total for the under-23s this season, and has one assist to his name.

This season is all about establishing himself as a regular at this level, and trying to nail down a spot in one particular position.

West Ham won the Checkatrade Trophy game 3-1 with Toni Martinez scoring twice and Martin Samuelsen adding another as the young Hammers came from a goal down to win.
