Edimilson Fernandes has explained to the Daily Mail that he hopes to establish himself in the centre of West Ham United’s midfield, and wants to become the Hammers’ version of Manchester United’s marquee summer signing.

Fernandes has shown some glimpses of real potential, but came to everyone’s attention with a brilliant goal in the League Cup tie with Chelsea in midweek that proved to be the winner.

But having been deployed in various positions across the midfield since his arrival from Sion in the summer, Fernandes suggested what role he hopes to make his own in Slaven Bilic’s team.

“Number eight, centrally,” he said, as reported by the Mail, when asked what his favoured position is. “Like Pogba.”

One problem that the Switzerland under-21 international does perhaps face is the amount of depth within West Ham’s midfield.

While the Irons have made a mixed start to the season, the likes of Dimitri Payet, Michail Antonio and Cheikhou Kouyate have continued to impress this term.

But with Fernandes providing a real glimpse of what he is capable of in midweek, it may not be too long before the 20-year-old is being given an extended run in the centre of the Hammers’ midfield.
