Hammers star Aaron Cresswell sat down for an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, and highlighted how this season’s poor campaign has been accentuated because of how much the club overachieved last term.
The 27-year-old full-back has endured a disappointing campaign from a personal level as well, after suffering a serious injury before the season started, and failing to hit the heights of last year.
West Ham currently sit in 12th position in the Premier League table, and are by no means safe from the threat of relegation, with just nine points separating themselves and Saturday’s opponents Hull City in 18th spot.
And Cresswell explained to Sky Sports how the Hammers’ points tally last season has made this term’s poor return look even worse than it actually has been:

“We want to get to that 40-point mark sooner rather than later. But looking at last year, we finished seventh with 62 points and you could arguably say we overachieved last season.”
Slaven Bilic’s men face a true test of their mettle upon the resumption of Premier League action, with back-to-back away games against Hull and Arsenal respectively.
And if they fail to win either of those matches, they could very well find themselves firmly entrenched in a relegation battle – something that would have seemed preposterous to even suggest at the start of the season.
