Hammers star Michail Antonio sat down for an exclusive interview with the club’s official website, and explained how there were different things that he wanted to grow up and become when he was younger, other than a footballer, but the beautiful game won over in the end.
The 26-year-old has been West Ham’s best player this season, by some distance, and has proven to be a revelation since making his £7 million move to the club from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2015.
He also received call-ups to the England national team, but was unfortunate to be ruled out through injury this time around.
And while Antonio’s love for football has been ever present, he explained to WHUFC.com how his career could have taken an entirely different path indeed:

“I was going to go to uni. At that moment I was in college doing a BTEC and I actually got into Southampton University to do Sports Science. So in the following September I would have gone to uni, but I managed to get signed by Reading in 2008. I was thinking of becoming a PE teacher, so I had other plans, but there was only one thing in my heart and that was football.”
The powerful winger has been utilised pretty much all over the pitch by Slaven Bilic this term, including a prolonged stint at right-back, but has still scored nine goals in 27 Premier League outings.
And the Croatian will surely have his work cut-out to keep hold of Antonio in the summer, with many of England’s biggest clubs having already expressed an interest in the 26-year-old.
