West Ham United midfielder Pedro Obiang has told Gianluca Di Marzio that a return to Italy is ‘very likely’ – and most probably with former club Sampdoria.

Obiang, 25, joined West Ham from Sampdoria back in the summer of 2015, having starred in Serie A after leaving Atletico Madrid in 2008.

After a frustrating first season with the Hammers, Obiang has enjoyed a more prominent role this term, starting 21 Premier League games and even notching his first goal in a 3-1 away win at Southampton in February.

Obiang’s season was brought to a premature end last month, with an ankle injury picked up against Leicester City ruling him out for the rest of the campaign – and he has used some of his down time to return to Italy.

The Spaniard travelled back to watch former club Sampdoria in action at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Sunday afternoon, in what was an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Obiang took time to speak to Gianluca Di Marzio about his situation, revealing that he intends to return to Italy one day – evening claiming that a move back to Serie A is ‘very likely’ in the future.

Obiang admitted that his preferred destination would be Sampdoria, but he isn’t ready to leave West Ham just yet, meaning Samp will have to wait before they can realistically mount a move for their former midfielder.

The Hammers ace finally added that there were discussions over a move to Fiorentina last summer, but West Ham were reluctant to let him go, and Obiang himself decided that he wanted to stay in East London.

“It’s very likely I’ll return to Italy, but I don’t know when,” said Obiang. “I would return here (Sampdoria) above all else, but you never know. I would certainly like to return, everyone wants to but there are many teams, we’ll have to wait a bit.”

“Fiorentina? There were some simple discussions, but West Ham didn’t want to sell me and I wanted to stay there,” he added.
