West Ham United defender Jose Fonte has made a worrying admission over the club’s next three games against Arsenal, Swansea City and Sunderland.

The Hammers are enduring a terrible second season under Slaven Bilic and sit 14th in the Premier League off the back of four consecutive defeats and with no wins in six.

It is in stark contrast to the record breaking season the East Londoners enjoyed last term where Bilic led them to a record Premier League points haul and to within four points of the Champions League places.

Losing to third-bottom Hull City last time out means the Hammers are just six points off the relegation places.

And now defender Jose Fonte, who has struggled to find the kind of form which saw him help Portugal win Euro 2016, has admitted in an interview with Sky Sports that he and his teammates know they must win at least two of their next three matches.

“A couple of wins will get you safe or three wins but if you don’t win the next two or three games you are in a dogfight,” Fonte told Sky Sports.

“We are aware of the situation of course. We are not happy with where we are and we are not happy with what has been happening.

“We have to change that and to start we have a big game against Arsenal on Wednesday and we have to get something out of that.”

The 33-year-old has been found wanting in many games since signing from Southampton for £8 million in January.

The club has sorely missed Angelo Ogbonna and with Winston Reid out for most of the season’s run-in the Portuguese knows he and his teammates must find some form and quickly.

Although Bilic managed it in his first game in charge of the club last season, winning at the Emirates will be no easy task on Wednesday night.

That puts immense pressure on Saturday’s home game against Swansea and the following match away at strugglers Sunderland, and the Hammers have not been good at dealing with pressure all season long.
