West Ham striker is still dangerous in front of goal.

Javier Hernandez #14 of Mexico reacts to the referee after a play during an international friendly soccer match against Croatia at AT&T Stadium on March 27, 2018 in Arlington, Texas.

West Ham believed they had signed the steal of the summer last year when they snapped up Javier Hernandez.

The Hammers spent £16 million to sign the Mexico international, but he has not been quite the roaring success they would have hoped – but it’s also better than that it has appeared.

Their league position, 14th, shows this, while Hernandez has been inconsistent.

He scored at the weekend against Chelsea, a vital equalising goal which secured a point at Stamford Bridge.

Hernandez is West Ham’s second highest scorer, with eight goals this season in the Premier League.

Ahead of the weekend, Hernandez had revealed he could look to move on in the summer if he is not starting regularly, and manager David Moyes told the club’s official website after the game that he understands the striker would not be happy with a spot on the bench.

The weekend proved one thing, and that’s how West Ham cannot afford to give up on the striker.

Hernandez is too good to cast aside, and West Ham must find a way to get him involved more regularly to keep him happy.

He averages a goal every 184 minutes in the league this season, which is better than a number of high profile forward.

It is superior to Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette (186 minutes), Jermain Defoe (238) and Alexis Sanchez (243).

The Mexican may not be perfect, and he will have games where he does not score, but West Ham must persist with him and make sure they do enough to keep him engaged enough to stick around next season.
