West Ham star Jarrod Bowen has told England’s YouTube channel that Tottenham striker and England captain Harry Kane ‘is a joke’ in training. Bowen and Kane are preparing for England’s Nations League fixtures.

Bowen, 25, has finally landed his first England call-up after a wonderful season with West Ham. The ex-Hull man helped West Ham reach the Europa League semi-finals and qualify for Europe once again.

Playing 51 times in all competitions during 2021-22, he had a hand in 31 goals – scoring 18 and creating 13. The kind of stats that made it impossible for Gareth Southgate to overlook this month.

England take on Hungary twice, Germany and Italy in four quick-fire Nations League games. Asked about England training, Bowen singled out Kane as the hardest worker – saying he needs to emulate his mentality.

“In terms of hardest trainer, Harry Kane. We did finishing yesterday, I wasn’t keeping up with him,” Bowen said, in a video posted on England’s YouTube channel. “I was like, ‘oh my god, this guy is a joke’.

“Right foot, left foot, header, shoulder. That is the level he sets for himself, he probably gets annoyed when he misses. Yesterday was just an eye-opener – this is the level. This is what the level needs to be.”

Bowen might not only be linking up with Kane at international level, but also for Spurs. That is according to recent reports, who make the surprise suggestion that Tottenham are considering Bowen this summer.

Against Hungary on Saturday night, away in Budapest, presents one of Bowen’s best chances to start across the four games. Against the likes of Germany and Italy, England will surely go full strength.

That is likely to see Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling, or Bukayo Saka, start either side of Kane. But against Hungary, Bowen might be given the chance to do his thing alongside Jack Grealish and Tammy Abraham.
