The Derby County player is just what West Ham United need, not that the Rams will want to lose him.
West Ham United left-back Aaron Cresswell is having a season to forget, with a string of below-par performances.
There is no doubting the 27-year-old’s innate talent. The problem is that has only been seen sporadically this season and Hammers manager Slaven Bilic may have a decision to make unless things take a turn for the better.
West Ham also have Arthur Masuaku on their books but the 23-year-old has not yet shown he has the ability to play week in, week out at the London Stadium. So what chance the Hammers dipping into the transfer market for a new left-back this summer?
At first glance that would seem unlikely, at least as long as both Cresswell and Masuaku are on the books, but there is an interesting alternative that Bilic should seriously consider.
Derby County’s Max Lowe may only be 19, yet he is arguably the best player the club have produced for the last decade.
The young left-back has featured 12 times for the Rams to date so he is slowly being bedded into the first-team setup, and in time he is expected to become a star.
So much has been written about Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon that Lowe’s emergence has slipped under the radar. However West Ham would be wise to make a sizeable bid this summer with the inclusion of a loan-back agreement.
That would allow Lowe to continue his development at Derby for the next year or two, before ultimately staking a claim at the Hammers.
It would also give Cresswell and Masuaku at least another season to prove their worth, while ensuring a superb replacement is already in place for further down the line.
West Ham have some of the most exciting young players in the country on their books and if Lowe were to join them, it would be another massive boost for a club whose future looks bright.
It would take a big bid, but it would be well worth it if the player fulfils his potential.
