Lamine Kone could join West Ham United after Sunderland’s relegation – but what does this mean for James Collins?

In all likelihood, there’s not a lot Sunderland can do to prevent Lamine Kone leaving Wearside this summer. The giant centre-back appeared determined enough to jump ship 12 months ago when he drove down to Goodison Park in a desperate attempt to force through a move to Everton – and that was after another great escape.

Therefore, Sunderland’s relegation means he’s unlikely to have a change of heart. And, according to the Daily Mirror, West Ham could offer Kone a Premier League lifeline.

And with cash-strapped Sunderland needing to sell in order to bring in additions this summer, they are hardly in a position to say no.

However, that does not mean they cannot attempt to at least sweeten the deal. Kone’s move to the London Stadium would surely have a detrimental effect on James Collins’ game-time next season, meaning the veteran centre-back could be forgiven for considering his future.

Everything Sunderland need

According to The Chronicle, the long-serving Welsh international was a target for the Black Cats in 2015 and he’d be an even more astute addition these days.

Collins’ best days are well behind him at the age of 33 but he would provide attributes that Sunderland have been badly lacking for far too long; namely leadership, spirit and the willingness to put his body on the line for the cause.

Furthermore, Papy Djilobodji and Paddy McNair are the only other centre-backs contracted to Sunderland beyond this summer – meaning the club must sign reinforcements as quickly as possible.

Making Collins part of the deal that would take Kone to West Ham, therefore, makes perfect sense.
