West Ham should shelve interest in Spurs’ Victor Wanyama

West Ham United are reportedly considering a move for Tottenham Hotspur ace Victor Wanyama.

It was recently reported by Tuttosport that West Ham are one of the teams interested in signing Victor Wanyama from Tottenham during one of the upcoming windows.

There was a period when it appeared that Spurs were going to do well to keep Wanyama away from one of the other top sides in Europe as he continued to make a major impression following his £11 million move from Southampton – fee reported by BBC Sport.

But, while his quality is hardly in doubt, West Ham should now steer clear. They already have Jack Wilshere struggling to prove that he was worth signing in the summer as he continues to battle with injury – and Wanyama’s recent track record suggests that he may end up in a similar boat.

Wanyama has made just eight Premier League starts since the start of last season, with none coming this term. If Manuel Pellegrini had guarantees that he could be relied upon, then it could prove to be a fantastic piece of business for the Irons.

Instead, West Ham should seriously consider putting some of the funds that they are willing to spend on Wanyama towards making sure that Declan Rice’s future is resolved.

As reported by the London Evening Standard, West Ham are yet to agree a new contract with the youngster with the Hammers wary of paying the teenager too much and preferring to offer an incentive-based deal.

It is a risk to throw a lot of money at a young player who may not develop, but it looks more than likely that Rice is going to become one of the most impressive players in the Premier League given that he has already shone at centre-back and in central midfield.

Investing in Rice would be nothing like the gamble that signing Wanyama would be for West Ham. It would be a significantly cheaper move and, currently, looks as though it will reap much greater dividends for the Hammers.

A fit and firing Wanyama would be a phenomenal signing for the Irons. But with the Kenya international currently some way off that level, West Ham should not hesitate to shelve any plans to pursue the Spurs man and instead make sure that Rice gets the contract he deserves.
