West Ham have been after a central midfielder throughout January.

David Moyes’ transfer priority at West Ham United this month is becoming more and more obvious, as the Hammers continue to be linked with a whole host of central midfielders.

Newcastle United’s Jonjo Shelvey, Bournemouth’s Harry Arter and Everton’s Tom Davies have all been linked with a move to the London Stadium, as well as Francis Coquelin who seemingly rejected Moyes to join Valencia instead.

Pedro Obiang and Cheikhou Kouyate’s form this season has been questionable to say the least, while captain Mark Noble has churned out a number of excellent performances but is now into his thirties.

The Hammers need another central midfielder, one that Moyes can trust to be consistent in the Premier League but also possesses the work rate and determination to win over the fans – with Obiang and Kouyate criticised for their laziness.

HITC Sport claimed earlier this week that Premier League new boys were interested in a move for £4million-rated midfielder Andrew Surman from Bournemouth, and the 31-year-old would be perfect to help Noble anchor the midfield.

At such a low price, the tough-tackling South African-born England Under-21 international would be a useful addition to the Hammers squad. He boasts all the necessary traits Moyes is looking for and is known for his consistency.

Underrated in the Premier League, Surman is renowned for his intricate array of passing but his time in the Championship and League One with the likes of Norwich, Bournemouth and Southampton has made him a tough customer.

He is more than willing to fly into tackles and win headers, and that kind of combative style of play will add a bit of steel to the Hammers midfield – something that will prove crucial if the Hammers find themselves in a relegation dogfight.

With 113 Premier League appearances under his belt and at just £4million, Surman would be a helpful addition to Moyes’ squad this month.
