West Ham United reportedly offered £26.5m for Yerry Mina before he left La Liga champions Barcelona for Premier League rivals Everton.
It just hasn’t worked out for Yerry Mina at Goodison Park.
One of three players who left Barcelona for Merseyside last summer, Mina was also the most expensive of the lot with Everton paying £27 million for the giant Colombian centre-back (BBC).
But Mina has done very little since then to suggest he was worth such a substantial fee. Instead, Everton have seen why Barca were so keen to let him go after just half a season at the Camp Nou.
Mina has looked jittery and error-prone throughout his much of Toffees career so far. Despite standing at 6ft 4, he struggled with Millwall’s aerial bombardment in January’s shock FA Cup defeat while his weaknesses were brutally exposed in an awful winter defeat against Manchester City.
The former Palmeiras favourite is out of action with injury right now but it’s hard to see him ousting Michael Keane and Kurt Zouma when he does return.
As it stands then, West Ham United will hardly be ruing the day that Mina chose Goodison Park over the London Stadium. Sport claimed in July that The Hammers offered £26.5 million for the giant centre-back, but they have had enough skittish defenders in recent years to last a lifetime.
Instead, West Ham landed Issa Diop and Fabien Balbuena last summer and both have looked far more assured than Mina. The Paraguayan arrived for a fraction of Mina’s price tag.
There are still two months of the season left but that £27 million move to Everton looks like another misstep in Mina’s increasingly underwhelming club career.
