West Ham United defender Aaron Cresswell is a summer target for Everton.
There was a time when a large section of West Ham fans would have been extremely concerned had reports emerged that Everton were eyeing a move for left-back Aaron Cresswell.
Since arriving from Ipswich in 2014, Cresswell has been a regular source of creativity down the left flank and has been a fairly reliable defender for the Irons.
But with The Sun on Sunday (08/04; page 13) reporting at the weekend that the Toffees are now considering a £25 million move for the 28-year-old, West Ham should arguably have no hesitation in giving a move the green light if Everton do make such an offer.
Cresswell has generally not been anywhere near his best this season and has only occasionally looked like the player who played his way into the England squad in 2016 and 2017.
The full-back is now 28 so is unlikely to improve significantly in the coming years, and this summer may represent one of the Hammers’ final chances to get such a significant fee for him if Everton do indeed make a £25 million bid.
And with a cluster of talented centre-backs in the squad and coming through, and Arthur Masuaku available on the left, it would appear that the Irons already have the depth to cope with losing Cresswell – and that is before they even spend the money that the defender’s departure would leave them with.
It may be a gamble to let Cresswell leave as he has shown that he does have the quality of a very good Premier League full-back, but based on what he has shown this season, West Ham should consider this summer the perfect time to let him move on if they do receive a £25 million offer.
