According to a report from the Daily Mirror (print edition; 21st January 2018; page 63), Andy Carroll is now keen to bag a new contract with West Ham after his potential move to Chelsea fell through.

The Mirror reports that the Blues were seeking a potential £20 million deal for the striker as Antonio Conte looked to bolster his goalscoring options – but an ankle injury has sidelined the Englishman and left the chances of a potential deal this month in tatters.

And the Mirror (print edition; 21st January 2018; page 63) is now reporting that the former Liverpool man is keen to agree a new contract with the Irons after his potential exit collapsed.

However, given his current injury status, it would surely be foolish of West Ham to hand Carroll a new deal right now even after he was linked with a move to a Premier League rival.

The Sun reports that Carroll is set to be out for the majority of the rest of the season with his current problem, and that is a sentence that Hammers fans must feel that they have got used to over the past few years.

The 29-year-old has made just 86 Premier League appearances since joining permanently in 2013 with injury sadly proving to be one of the key narratives throughout his career.

If he was able to stay fit, then of course, the mistake West Ham would be making would be to let his contract run into its final 18 months. But at this stage, it is difficult to see how the Hammers can justify giving Carroll the new contract he wants when the forward cannot be relied upon to show his true quality on more than a handful of occasions each season.
