West Ham United should make a move for Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson in the summer transfer window.
Manuel Lanzini may have played well last season following the departure of Dimitri Payet in the January transfer window, but if West Ham United want to break into the top eight and perhaps even challenge for the Europa League places, then they should sign Gylfi Sigurdsson from Swansea City.
Sigurdsson is one of the best midfielders in the world, and his performances for Swansea since his move from Tottenham Hotspur in 2014 prove that.
The Iceland international scored nine goals and provided 13 assists in 38 Premier League appearances for Swansea during the 2016-17 campaign, as the Swans narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship.
It is clear that the 27-year-old midfielder is much better than fighting against relegation to the Championship, and it is only a matter of time before he leaves the Swans.
Everton and Leicester City want Sigurdsson, according to BBC Sport, and it would be wise of West Ham to get in on the act. The Daily Star reported of the Hammers’ interest in the midfielder earlier this month, and it is time for Slaven Bilic’s side to start getting serious.
Swansea want as much as £50 million for Sigurdsson, according to BBC Sport, and although one suspects that West Ham would not be willing to pay much money, they should test the water with a bid, maybe of around £40m, similar to what Leicester are claimed to have made. It could get rejected, but at least it would show that the Hammers mean business.
Lanzini is a good attacking midfielder, but Sigurdsson is better, has more experience and is more established. The former Tottenham man is the perfect man to fill the Payet-sized hole in West Ham’s midfield.
