West Ham reportedly sent a scout to watch Sporting Lisbon star Matheus Nunes this weekend, with Liverpool and Chelsea also looking to sign the Portuguese international.

According to A Bola, the east London side are still looking to sign Nunes after making a reported offer to bring the midfielder to the Premier League earlier in the window, though the bid was rejected by Sporting as well as the player, who turned down a huge contract from West Ham.

Reportedly valued at €50m (£43m) and also wanted by Liverpool and Chelsea, Nunes is one of the highest-rated players in the Portuguese top-flight, with Premier League interest high in the 23-year-old midfielder, with A Bola also claiming that Wolves are keen on the Sporting star.

Indeed, West Ham are playing an unusual game with Nunes given that they have already had an offer rejected for the midfielder this summer and reports that other English sides are closing in on the 23-year-old, with the Irons also seemingly more interested in signing defenders this week.

Kurt Zouma is currently West Ham’s only fully fit centre-back with Craig Dawson, Angelo Ogbonna and new signing Nayef Aguerd all out on the injury table, and signing a defender is of much greater concern for the Irons than a midfielder like Nunes despite the Sporting star’s obvious talents.

West Ham need to move on from Nunes to bring in defenders

West Ham’s seasonal injury curse has come much earlier than normal this campaign, and for David Moyes, the Irons’ boss must do as much damage control as possible this summer to fix these problems at the back, which means moving on from signing Nunes.

After all, there are major problems and holes in West Ham’s squad, and signing defenders before the closure of the window will be an excellent next step for the Hammers if they’re to get their season back on track after losing the two opening games of the campaign.
