It has been reported that West Ham are in talks with Mikel, who is a free agent at the moment, having left Turkish club Trabzonspor earlier this season.
The report had added that the former Chelsea defensive midfielder – described as “exceptional” by former Middlesbrough boss Tony Pulis when he was in charge of the club, as quoted on Skysports.com – wants to return to England, and that he wants to play in the Premier League.
Sky Sports reported last week that West Bromwich Albion – managed by former West Ham manager Slaven Bilic and aiming to clinch automatic promotion from the Championship – are interested in the 33-year-old former Boro player as well.
Good signing for West Ham United or West Bromwich Albion?
Mikel may be 33 years of age, but the Nigerian remains a very capable midfielder who had been a success in the Premier League.
The former Chelsea star would make West Ham or West Brom a much better and stronger team in the middle of the park, and given that he is a fee agent, he would also be a low-cost signing in the summer transfer window.
Meanwhile, West Ham manager David Moyes has praised Tomas Soucek for his performance against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Sunday.
Moyes told Football.London: “Well when we got Tomas in we knew he had goals with him, we hadn’t seen it yet but then he played very well against Chelsea and then again today. He’s got other attributes that can help us too.”
