Some West Ham fans have been reacting on social media after Louie Scott thanked the Irons fanbase for the reception they gave his brother, Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard.
Lingard returned to east London on Sunday after spending the second half of last season on loan with the Hammers. The England international was an instant hit in claret-and-blue and ended his Irons stay with nine-goals, five-assists in 16 appearances.
West Ham explored retaining Lingard permanently on his return to Manchester United this summer. But 90min noted the 28-year-old personally informed David Sullivan he wanted to go back and fight for his future at Old Trafford after playing zero league minutes last term.

Lingard has only played a bit-part role in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans at Manchester United this season, however. He came on in the 73rd-minute at West Ham on Sunday for his third substitute outing of the league campaign. Playing a mere haul of 45-minutes in all so far.
Yet Lingard has scored in each of his last two top-flight appearances, including netting the winner at the London Stadium. The 31-cap maestro struck home in the 89th-minute before Mark Noble missed a 95th-minute penalty.
Despite the end outcome, West Ham fans made Lingard feel welcome on his return to east London with Manchester United. Scott was grateful for the reception the fanbase gave his brother, noting on his Instagram Story:
“Respect where it is due. Thank you to all the West Ham fans for my kid bro’s reception. Thank you for always loving him, even if he was on the opposite team. West Ham and those there today, that was a touch of class. Always in our [heart].”
West Ham fans react to Scott’s message on Lingard reception
Some West Ham fans reacted on social media to Scott’s message on the reception Lingard received with Manchester United. With some voicing their respect for how Scott has acted after his brother’s spell at the London Stadium last season.
Others have also voiced hope in Lingard yet returning to east London for good with his Old Trafford future uncertain. Reports by The Sun claim he is one of several the Red Devils may look to sell in January. The Evening Standard also note the £100k-a-week maestro rejected a new contract at Manchester United, despite his current deal expiring next June.
But, despite the Daily Star claiming West Ham pondered offering Manchester United £15m for Lingard – who they valued at £25m – this summer, David Moyes bought Nikola Vlasic on Deadline Day, knowing Lingard wanted to stay at Old Trafford. He may now feel the Irons are well stacked in their attacking midfield options, even if the England ace is available.
