The West Ham centre-back is nearing the end of his current contract.

West Ham United’s immediate priority is certainly to stay in the Premier League but the club will also soon have a decision to make on James Collins.

The experienced defender is out of contract at the end of the season and West Ham have yet to offer him fresh terms, as reported by the Daily Mail.

In his second spell at West Ham, Collins has played over 200 games for the club and remains a popular figure amongst both staff and supporters.

It is true that the 34-year-old isn’t quite as resilient as he previously was, and he is now more error-prone, but at his best the Welshman can still be a useful squad member for West Ham.

Collins’ experience and leadership skills are very useful for David Moyes’ side, especially given their current predicament as they look to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Offering Collins a new one-year deal would probably be the best solution and would help to ensure that West Ham have sufficient depth at centre-back going into next season.

However, it is possible that Collins may seek one final challenge in the latter stages of his career, and in such a case he couldn’t be begrudged the opportunity to go elsewhere.
