West Ham United should’ve signed Andre Gomes before Everton were a factor.

West Ham United aren’t exactly living up to their pre-season billing.
Manuel Pellegrini spent in excess of £100 million on transfers during the summer, but fast forward a few months and the Irons are 13th in the Premier League table, five points clear of the bottom three.
Some of their signings have impressed, such as Issa Diop and Lukasz Fabianski, while Felipe Anderson, who represented the bulk of their summer outlay at £36 million, might be about to light up the division after scoring twice in the 4-2 win over Burnley on Saturday.
Others, however, have struggled to make a big impact and one of those is probably Jack Wilshere.
The former Arsenal midfielder, who joined the Irons on a free transfer, has been absent for two months after undergoing ankle surgery, and you wonder if West Ham would’ve been better off getting Andre Gomes instead of the 26-year-old.
According to Spanish outlet Sport in August, East London was the most probable destination for the Barcelona midfielder, who wound up joining Everton on a season-long loan.
The Portugal international, on £80,000 per week [Total Sportek], has been hugely impressive in recent weeks and dazzled again in Saturday’s victory over Brighton, leading to praise from Matt Le Tissier and Peter Reid since.
While Wilshere remains sidelined, West Ham fans could be forgiven for thinking that they’d be a better side with Gomes than the Englishman.
