Both were desperate for all three points from the game, with them sitting at the wrong end of the table at present.
It proved to be a frustrating afternoon in that regard, though, as they were forced to share the points in a 1-1 draw.
Cristhian Stuani had given the away side the lead but a superb solo effort from Dimitri Payet levelled the scores and neither side could grab another.

This time it was a draw as the two players managed to come out on top in three areas apiece.
Payet managed more key passes as well as winning more dribbles than Downing did throughout the game.
He was also better in that crucial area, goal-scoring, having managed his super goal while Downing did not get on the score sheet.
The Middlesbrough man was the better passer, though, playing more accurate passes and enjoying a better overall passing accuracy. He also lost the ball on fewer occasions.
The two were level when it came to successful final third passes (11) while neither managed to register an assist.
