Chris Sutton claimed on Twitter that there is ‘so much’ to admire about David Moyes after the West Ham manager orchestrated a win over Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.
The Irons reached the Last 16 of the competition after holding on to win 1-0 at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Manuel Lanzini met Ryan Frederick’s cutback to slot home the only goal of the affair in the ninth-minute. They will now face Man City at home in the next round.
West Ham had not won away to Manchester United in any competition since Carlos Tevez’s winner in December 2007. Losing 13 of their 17 visits in-between. Their last cup victory at the Red Devils also came back in January 2001, when Paolo di Canio scored the only goal.

West Ham flew out of the blocks at Old Trafford on Wednesday night and fully deserved their early goal. Alex Telles and Jadon Sancho had no answers for Frederick’s work on the wing, before cutting back to Lanzini.
Andriy Yarmolenko, Mark Noble and Jarrod Bowen also had late chances to seal victory for the travelling Irons. But the trio spurned their opportunities to further punish Manchester United for their tepid performance. With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s heavily-changed side, full of internationals, cutting peripheral figures unable to break through Moyes’ men.
West Ham defended strongly throughout to maintain their lead, and proved dangerous on their forward forays. Ultimately, they could not find a second but did enough to edge the Red Devils for a place in the Last 16. And Sutton was full of praise for Moyes after the game. Simply noting on Twitter: “So much to admire about David Moyes.”
Sutton praise on special night for West Ham boss Moyes
Sutton’s praise came on a special night for Moyes after orchestrating a rare West Ham win away to Manchester United. It was also the Scottish coach’s first win over the Red Devils since they fired him in 2014. Losing six of his prior eight clashes since leaving Old Trafford.
Moyes has now taken five victories against Manchester United in 33 meetings as a manager in his career. Also securing revenge for West Ham’s 2-1 loss in the Premier League on Sunday, when Noble could not convert a 95th-minute penalty to salvage a draw.
West Ham will hope this term sees Moyes orchestrate further rare feats to add to securing their European return last season. The Irons had not taken part in the Europa League group stage before the current term. And last played in any UEFA competition proper in 2007.
