West Ham are reportedly set to extend Angelo Ogbonna’s contract by one extra year via a clause in the Italian international’s deal with the club.
According to the Athletic, the Irons will initially activate this clause in Ogbonna’s contract before opening official talks with the centre-back over a new contract, despite the defender missing over five months of action.
The defender ruptured his ACL in a 3-2 win against Liverpool back in November, ruling Ogbonna out for the season and leaving West Ham light in the centre-back position.
Luckily for David Moyes’ side, neither Kurt Zouma nor Craig Dawson have suffered major injuries in Ogbonna’s absence, with West Ham now in a UEFA Europa League semi-final against Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.
And this latest news that West Ham will extend Ogbonna’s contract automatically will be reassuring for Hammers supporters, with the £70,000-a-week defender a fan favourite at the London Stadium.
Indeed, with West Ham set for another season in Europe, Ogbonna staying at the club and signing a new contract will be massive for the east London side given the quality and depth the defensive titan brings to the Irons defence.
Ogbonna latest is another promising sign for West Ham’s future

The 31-year-old Italian centre-back has been key for West Ham for many years, and the club activating Ogbonna’s one-year extension is yet another smart move from the Hammers that will get fans excited.
Under David Moyes, the Irons have made numerous decisions that have led to this incredible and exciting era for the club, and keeping Ogbonna and West Ham for another season is just one more smart choice from the east Londoners.
