West Ham should pursue Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge, but only on a permanent deal.

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge is reportedly open to a move away from the club this January, with The Daily Star reporting last month West Ham are favourites for his signature.

Sturridge at his best can be a real difference maker, and has a proven track record of scoring goals in the Premier League.

But while Sturridge comes with the label of a natural goalscorer, there is also a big red flag over his injury history.

West Ham have experienced first hand what a problem this can be, with the last striker they signed from Liverpool being the injury prone Andy Carroll.

That isn’t to say that the relegation threatened Hammers should back off a move for Sturridge, purely that they should focus their efforts on a loan move.

Sturridge is desperate to earn a World Cup spot with England, and his motivation in the second half of this season will be higher than ever.

West Ham can’t let their own panic over their position make a decision which is not wise long term, and Sturridge’s fitness an injury history means he is a big risk.

He has never played more than 29 games in six Premier League seasons for the Reds, and a ‘try before you buy’ loan is essential, and could suit Sturridge if he believes he deserves a bigger platform than West Ham long term.
