West Ham United are expected to be extremely active during this summer’s transfer window.
Tony Gale
When speaking live on Sky Sports‘ Premier League Daily show at 11:07 am on Thursday March 9th, Hammers legend Tony Gale explained how the size of the pitch at his former club’s new stadium should determine the type of player who Slaven Bilic targets in the summer.
West Ham’s player recruitment last summer proved to be a disastrous experiment, after a whole host of free signings and loan deals were made.
The vast majority of those signings went on to be complete and utter flops, and whilst other teams in and around them in the table were spending heavily, the Hammers were left behind.
They have managed to salvage their season, however, with a decent run in the middle of their campaign, but they still sit in 11th position in the Premier League table, four spots below their seventh placed finish last term.
And Gale suggested how West Ham should be targeting players with one specific attribute in particular this summer, when speaking to Sky Sports:
West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic
“They need some fresh players, and the West Ham pitch at the Olympic Stadium is a big pitch. I suggest they have got to get some more athletic players in the team because you need them when you’re playing there.”
One area where the Hammers will surely be looking to improve is the striking department, with Andy Carroll, Andre Ayew and Diafra Sakho all proving to be unreliable when it comes to their fitness.
Whether or not the club’s owners provide Bilic with a war-chest that will enable him to bring in players of sufficient quality remains to be seen, however.
